House of Delegates Approves New R.R.A. Chapter
July 07, 2010
The adoption of a Registered Radiologist Assistant Chapter in the ASRT House of Delegates was a key highlight of the 2010 ASRT Annual Governance and House of Delegates Meeting June 25-27 in Albuquerque, N.M.
For three days, delegates reviewed motions, attended chapter meetings and participated in discussions that would shape the ASRT and the radiologic technology profession. In addition to governance business, delegates had the opportunity to network, participate in the annual pin exchange event and recognize ASRT's two new Life Members, four Fellows and other award recipients.
Several important decisions were made at the annual meeting. Delegates were tasked with reviewing and voting on 60 proposed changes to the ASRT Bylaws, position statements and practices standards.
Nineteen of 20 bylaw amendments were adopted. The only amendment that was not adopted was a proposal to dissolve chapters within the ASRT governance system. The amendment to establish the R.R.A. Chapter will have a profound impact on the makeup of the ASRT chapter system. The first new chapter in more than a decade, it will seat delegates in the 2011 annual meeting.
Delegates also were presented with 40 main motions that touched practice standards, scopes of practice and position statements. Nineteen motions were placed on the consent calendar and were accepted as written. Of the remaining 21 motions, six were adopted; one motion was divided with one part adopted and the other defeated; and 14 others were defeated, withdrawn, ruled out of order or referred back to committee.
One key change is a revision to the radiologist assistant section of the ASRT Practice Standards for Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy. To ensure that RAs can meet the needs of radiologists, the radiologist assistant scope of practice now is written to mirror other physician extenders.
Additionally, delegates elected the speaker and vice speaker of the House for 2010-2011. Donna Long, M.S.M., R.T.(R)(M)(QM), FASRT, was nominated to serve a second term as speaker, and Sandra Hayden, B.S., R.T.(T), was nominated for a second term as vice speaker. With no other candidates throwing their hats in the ring, delegates overwhelmingly approved Ms. Long and Ms. Hayden.
Complete coverage of the annual meeting will be featured in the August/September issue of ASRT Scanner.
